I saw my first firefly of the season this past week - on June 1st, in fact. It's about a month earlier than usual; typically July 1st is the date we think of as the start of the firefly season on Long Island. But like everything else this year, the mild winter may have moved the schedule up a bit. But who's to argue? Just grab your bug jar (and maybe a youngster or two) and get out there! If you need it, here's some more background on everyone's favorite summer insect. Enjoy!
