As part of our contract with the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Seatuck recently organized an effort to move alewife from the Peconic River to Massapequa Creek. The fish were caught with a throw net at the base of the Woodhull Dam in Riverhead and moved in an aerated tank in the back of a truck to the bottom of the west spillway at Massapequa Lake. We didn't see any evidence of the fish moving up the fish ladder into the lake, but we suspect they were regrouping in calm water after their big move. We're hopeful that they'll head up the ladder within a few days. A big thank you is owed to the NY Department of Conservation for aiding in the effort. And to Byron Young, Chris Scott, Julie Nace and Kelly Hines for helping out.
