The excitement of installing new fish counters culminated last week when - with water temperature creeping up toward 50 - the alewife migration got underway in earnest and our Peconic River counter captured its first images of migrating fish on March 30. Here's a small clip ...
[Note: the start/stop nature of the film results from the fact that the system only records footage when fish are present.]
It was a surprise to everyone involved that the migration came under the cover of darkness. While it is known that alewife sometimes migrate at night, this is the first indication that the Peconic run was nocturnal. It remains to be seen whether the run will continue at night or whether this first night of movement was driven by the rising tide that peaked near midnight. Those of us involved in the project were giddy with excitement to see the fish moving across the screen - I hope you enjoy it, too. Stay tuned for updates!
